What Is a Pinched Nerve?

A pinched nerve occurs as a result of too much pressure applied to a nerve by a variety of mechanical irritants. Chemical irritation can simulate a pinched nerve, or can worsen the effect of mechanical irritation. Most people experience full recovery within days of the original injury, since the nervous system is able to often repair itself. Medical methods are frequently needed to “help” the nerves recover.

The symptoms of a pinched nerve include numbness, pins and needles, burning sensations, pain and in severe cases loss of sensation or loss of muscle function. The extent of pinched nerve injuries may vary from minor to major, temporary to a permanent condition. Early diagnosis is important to prevent further damage, permanency and disability. A pinched nerve can occur with sports injuries, on-the job injuries, trauma and over-use injuries.
